Announcing the 2010 Eid Al-Fitr Fanworks Challenge!

The crescent moon has been spotted in various time zones across the world, and Wednesday the 11th of August, 2010, will be the start of the month of Ramadan.

Which means it is also time for the start of our annual fanworks challenge - this being the fourth year we've been running it!

Eid-Al-Fitr will be being celebrated across the world between 10th to 12th September, 2010, depending on local moon sightings. eid_ka_chand's annual challenge asks for fanworks -- be they fic, art, vids, icons, meta, picspam etc. -- that focus on a fictional Muslim character.

Fanworks do not need to explicitly focus on Eid or Islam, and can be about characters who are culturally rather than actively practising Muslim.

The master list of fictional Muslim characters is a good place to start looking for fandoms you can create in.

We are running the challenge for fanfiction this year at the Archive of Our Own. Post to the collection there if you are create fanfiction of any length. We will be creating a master list of other fanworks generated that we cross-post to both eid_ka_chand and eid_fic, so you can choose to post or link to icons, vids, fanart etc at the community of your choice.

Last year we had 12 stories and 5 icon posts... and not a single piece of fanart or vid. The visibility of Muslim characters in dominant Anglophone media is minor and one-dimensional. We really really hope that fandom can help us increase the representation, and join all of us who celebrate Eid!

I'm currently monofannish with a fandom where I can't think of a single Muslim character. Is it cool to take a character with unspecified background and make that a Muslim character? (Kind of like Xibolai.) What about OCs?

Original Characters are encouraged and welcome, and I will edit the post to reflect that!
Writing a character with unspecified religous background as Muslim is also ok, as long as is doesn't appropriate that character's canonical history (in other words, a fic about a Jewish rabbi or Hindu priest converting to Islam would need to really carefully written for us to feel comfortable about including it). :)

Just a question here... rydra_wong was talking about Eid al-Fitr/Days of Awesome crossovers and said that you had (I think?) talked about the idea of doing "Adam Lambert meets Aladdin." Which is pretty cool. But I thought that RPF wasn't allowed? Or is it only RPF about Muslims that isn't allowed?

We want the focus to be on fictional Muslim characters. If there is mention of historical or otherwise real people, Muslim or not, that's ok, but the main protagonist should be fictional and Muslim.

deepad told me about this challenge and convinced me to volunteer to do fanart. Actually, this sounds like an amazing idea in the first place, so she didn't really have to work hard to convince me. The conversation actually went thus:

deepad: You sign up to do fanart eid_ka_chand!

Me: Ooooh! What is that?

deepad: *explains eid_ka_chand and its amazing awesomeness*

Me: *mind is blown* I'M IN.

So I am doing fanart :D

There's should be a "should" in "You should sign up to do fanart in eid_ka_chand". My fingers were too happy as I typed, and I did not check for typos. I suspect this is part of the reason why I draw art and not write fic.
