Announcing the EKC 2012 Challenge!

Ramzan begins this weekend across the world, which means it's also time for our annual fanworks challenge! Our challenge asks for fanworks (fic, art, vids, icons, meta, picspam &c.) that focus on a fictional Muslim character. They do not need to explicitly focus on Eid or Islam, and can be about cultural rather than religious Muslims. Depending on local moon sightings, Eid Al-Fitr this year will be 19th August.

We are once again running the fanfiction challenge this year on Archive of Our Own. You may post fanfiction of any length to the Eid 2012 collection. Icons, vids, fanart &c can be posted or linked to in this community or the one at livejournal. If you do not have an A03 account please do request an invite and we will send you one.

Any questions or concerns can be directed to: ekc [dot] mod [at] gmail [dot] com

The master list of fictional Muslim characters is a good place to start. We look forward to whatever all of you can offer.

I happened to go to Ao3 without being logged in, and noticed that my eid_ka_chand story was up as a "mystery work" to be revealed soon. The reason I've never noticed before is that I've always been logged in and able to see my own stories...

I tried to edit, but couldn't find a place to un-mystery it. Is it something one of the mods can do? Otherwise I suppose I'll have to take it off the collection so that at least people can read it.

We will also release the master list for this year's works soon, so if there are any icon posts, meta, vids, or art that have not been posted to the community over Ramzan, you may either post them directly to the community, or link in comments & we will add them.

I'm not entirely sure what's going on with the DCnU. Hopefully Billai Asseiah(Nightrunner) hasn't got completely lost in the shuffle.

However, I was just reading an interview with Paul Cornell about the line up for his new sword and sorcery book Demon Knights, and we finally got a full team line up.

But he did reveal that besides Etrigan, the comic also features Vandal Savage, an immortal who's been around since the days of cavemen.

Cornell has since revealed more line-up for the comic during convention appearances, including: Horsewoman, an archer who can ride horses but cannot walk; Shining Knight, a young sword-carrying hero whose true identity (and gender) is masked behind armor; Madame Xanadu, a mystic with a mysterious background; and Al Jabr, a Medieval playboy inventor

It's 3 weeks for Dreamwidth and to kick off, eid_ka_chand is hosting a comment fic fest!

Rules:
1) Any prompts/tropes of all-ratings are welcome here as long as they have a Muslim (religiously or culturally) as the lead character. Here is a master list. Please note we have a no-RPF policy.
ETA: Feel free to ask for original characters in case the canon doesn't have any.
2) Please write the fandom and pairing and/or main character(s) in the subject line of your request. Prompts can be words, themes, a situation, anything that strikes your fancy. One prompt per comment. We welcome multilingual prompts/replies, please make a note of that in your prompt/reply and it will be included in our master list.
4) Reply directly to the prompt and if it's too long for one comment, reply to your first comment. Kindly include FILLED: title, fandom/character and rating in your reply subject, with any relevant trigger warnings. If replying to Part 1, you can repeat the subject or just write "Part 2".
5) Multiple replies to a single prompt are most welcome. Writers may write as many responses as they like, and prompters may write as many prompts as they like.

Admin: Money raised last year, and mod change

Hi folks - my deep apologies for not getting to this sooner!
I totalled the amounts in the reciepts forwarded to me by sponsors of the Eid-al-Thon that we held last year to raise funds for the survivors of the Pakistan earthquake, and, thanks to several generous doners who contributed more than their pledged commitment, we managed to raise...

45 Pound Sterling, 5,000 Yen, and $1,655!!!!

(It is possible that we have also raised an additional $72.50 - if you're one of the people whom I PMed yesterday asking for a copy of your reciept, just let me know and I can add your amount to our final tally.)

Once again, a huge thanks you to both all the generous sponsors, and the fan creaters who produced the many fanworks that helped raise this money.

Also remember, the collection at AO3 is open for submissions of fic centering around a fictional Muslim character all year round, and in addition has subcollections for each year of the Eid-al-Fitr challenge.

I'd also like to mention that the lovely azuire and kairia will be taking over as the mods of this comm since I need to step down, and will be running the Eid-al-Thon in August this year.

Since many don't have a scooby who Christian and Syed are I thought I'd post here my ten minute round up I made for the story so far... it was my first vid in the fandom when my clip choice was limited and not great, I have improved it in the last few months with better sourced clips so it's not my favourite work but for any interested in 'falling' into looking them up more (pimp hat on) then you might like this...

New comic book to feature Muslim superhero (source: San Francisco Chronicle)

The superhero's appearance hasn't been finalized, but he definitely will be a Muslim boy in a wheelchair.

I take issue with the use of "unlikely" in the first sentence of the article, but the rest sounds quite promising.
