Eid Mubarak!

It is Eid al-Adha, and this slideshow from the BBC captures some of the images of celebration around the world.

Consider this a chance to post that Eid fic you were working on but never got around to posting, or just write a quick drabble in the comments!

A total of 12 stories, which I'm fairly sure beats 2008 hands down. Take that, 2008!

As ever, we accept submissions year round.

Hey all, I and [personal profile] shewhohashope would like to thank all of you for the best Eid yet - we had icons and fic and meta in both comms, and in general a greater awareness of Eid in fandom. Which makes us very happy, and gives us hope that the comms will continue to be fruitful and multiply. I'll be making a master list of everything posted in both comms soon, so that you can catch anything you might have missed, and leave feedback! (Please do feedback!)

In case you missed out on posting for Eid, please know that any time is a good time to post to this comm, and we will welcome cross-posts and links as well as original content.

We'd also like to point out that the original rare fandom challenge is upon us - Yuletide! And nominations for this year are open till 8:59 pm US Eastern time on Tuesday, October 20th. This is a great opportunity to ask for stories from our master list of sources with Muslim characters. Some fandoms already have some stories written for them: here's last year's list compiling them. But they have to be nominated in order to be requested and written for.

So go ye forth and nominate!

A-hoy hoy!

I was asked to link back to a recent post I made about the new season of Little Mosque on the Prairie and my thoughts on the recent developments re: the arrival of Reverend Thorne and the disappearance of Muslims as the show's focus.

Hi everyone, [personal profile] dhobikikutti let me know you might be interested in the post I made recently about Nazim Talawi, a Muslim character in a Danish TV show.

As I discuss, he's the most prominent positive Muslim character in an otherwise Western cop show I can think of. (I haven't watched East West 101 yet, but plan to).

So I did a crappy thing during eid_fic. I took a canonically Hindu-background character, no matter how half-assedly portrayed as Hindu-background in canon, even if you can only really tell for sure that his background is Hindu from the extra-canonical casting call, and made him Muslim-background. I knew what was intended by the canon creators, and I didn't change the character's background for any insight or commentary, I changed it because it was inconvenient for me to have his background be Hindu instead of Muslim. That pretty much sucks. I'm not sure what to do about it except acknowledge that it was a shitty thing to do.

I wanted to write some fic for a canonically Muslim character, which I did not do during eid_fic., so here it is.

Here's a drabble series that's been in my head for a while, since the last time I reread The Shadow Speaker.

Hello there. I’m here to talk about a famous mythological figure.

They called him Hang Tuah.

It’s really funny, but when I was asked, earlier this year about fictional Muslims, I actually truthfully said that I couldn’t remember any.

Thing is, [personal profile] dhobikikutti started pestering me to talk about Muslim characters, write some Muslim fic, and I honestly couldn’t get myself started, because… well because I was lazy. Still am, actually.

But then I remembered: Hey, isn’t Hang Tuah a Muslim? It’s weird, because I normally associate Hang Tuah with Malay-ness (he’s kind of the quintessential Malay guy, really). And this is funny, because I remember playing him once in an amateur play. I was really bad at it.

So. How does Hang Tuah’s story go?

here's how it went )

Anyway, I thought it was cool, and I wanted to share.

Additional edits made after some feedback from one of my friends )

Both of these are posted in [livejournal.com profile] eid_fic:

Title: To your health and your happiness
Prompt: Guilt
Fandom: Temeraire
Rating: General audiences
Characters: Sara Maden and Mihrişah Sultan
Notes: For [info]daysofawesome and [info]eid_fic
Warning: Seriously, everything I know about Mihrişah Sultan, the Ottoman sultanate, and Ottoman sadaqa I know from about 45 minutes of browsing the web in a rush before it's time for services, and I realize this ficlet reads like "look at all the research I did!". If everything here is not wrong, I will be flabbergasted; half the material I read contradicted the other half. But the more I read about her the more impressed I was. She took charge of educational reform, founded a medical school, built soup kitchens, and developed a diplomatic corps. Not at all the exotic seraglio maiden that Laurence's men hoped to spy upon, eh?
Warning 2: Warning, this is way too sappy. But there is no time. Pretend its sticky sweetness is like honey for your apples. Also these warnings are now longer than the story.

Fandom: House, M.D.
Rating: general audience
For: [livejournal.com profile] daysofawesome and [livejournal.com profile] eid_fic / [info - community] eid_ka_chand
Prompt: Betrayal
Note: Despite Fox's weird 'obituary', canon is too inconsistent to preclude Kutner (born Lawrence Choudray) having been raised Muslim. I'm sorry, that's two consecutive stories without canonically Muslim characters.

Notes: Some of these icons are from the production material, including sketches and a very early design for Aladdin. Most of the stills came from Aladdin Central. If there's any icon you want textless that I don't already provide, I can see if I still have a copy with layers and take it out if so. Eid Mubarak!

The moon has been sighted, and Sunday has been announced as Eid in a number of countries. So depending on timezones, it is Eid, and time to celebrate!

Please post your fics here with the title, fandom, rating and warnings outside a cut or above the link.

And India at least, is probably celebrating Eid on Monday, so feel free to take advantage of the extra time to lure more people into participating.

[[personal profile] dhobikikutti said this post would be welcome. I hope I've done an okay job of it. Please let me know if I haven't.]

I recently wrote a post about East West 101, an Australian show that features a Muslim detective as the main character. The show is about to go into its second (very short) season and I'd love to be able to share the enjoyment (hopefully) with others. For that reason, I've uploaded the first episode and will be uploading the other episodes as well.

The show was made by SBS, which is a multilingual and multicultural television and radio broadcaster, and doesn't shy away from race or religion. It also features Detective Malik's family and focuses on the Muslim community they inhabit in Sydney, as well as a number of other different communities.

I can't comment on how well Malik and his family, community and religion are portrayed because I don't have sufficient knowledge, but I can say that I find he and his wife to be very three dimensional characters and they seem to be treated with respect by the writers. As are the audience, which is a bit shocking at times.

If you're interested, please feel free to pop over to my post and download the episodes.
